And Then There Was One

There is a stillness about the neighborhood as I place my feet on the floor. Normally, at this time of day, our little community is bustling with kids heading to school, adults heading to work. But something

I stepped outside to get the paper as I always did, only to discover it wasn't there. I know I paid the bill, so why it wasn't is lost on me. Shrugging, I look up and down my street, dumbfounded by the fact that my neighborhood resembles a ghost town. Bikes lay abandoned on the lawns. Cars left scattered here and there, with doors left open on some.

Scared, I turned and went back inside and ran to the TV, turning on the news, only to be meet with static. Flipping through the channels that would be live, I found nothing but dead air. Turning to the radio, I found nothing but white noise. The internet left me with no answers as well.

Dressing quickly, I jumped into my car and headed into town, dodging stray vehicles here and there. There was no one, not one single soul, in my town of normally several thousand. Parking lots were empty, school yards bare. There was no gleeful laughter coming from the swings in the park, no sounds of the trash being collected.

There wasn't even a bark from a dog.

I was.....alone.

I knew that I would find no answers in my little town, so I went home, packed up several must-haves, grabbed all of my money and locked my house up. I knew I needed to go to a larger city, one where I might find an answer to.....something.

But as I drove on deserted interstates and highways, I found no clues. I found no one who could tell me what happened.

I found no one.

I drove until I ran out of money, then I just resigned myself to the fact that I was truly alone in this world and that I had to do what was needed to survive. I often found myself sitting on the hood of my now well-traveled car, looking out at the ocean or over a mountain and wondering if there was life outside of this continent.

I would never know. The only thing I did know is one thing.....

I was lonely.

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 16 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My prompt was: "You wake up and realize you are the last person on Earth" and it was submitted by my dear friend Stacy from Stacy Sews and Schools. I hope I did you proud.

Here are links to all the sites now featuring Secret Subject Swap posts.  Sit back, grab a cup, and check them all out. 1. OMG...this is similar to my prompt, well kind of similar. What a scary prompt to write, really makes you think. AHhhhhh...

  2. SUPER awesome job!!!! I am very proud!!
I must have been watching "I Am Legend" again.... LOL

  3. Great post! And super scary thought!

  4. Shoot, as you were driving I thought "she's gonna run out of gas, what if the gas station is deserted, too..?'
That is a sad and scary thought… (not the gas station - this whole scenario, so next time I encounter annoying people, I'm gonna think that the world is still a better place with them)

  5. I agree. All the beautiful scenery, all the fun stuff to do, is nothing if you have no one to share it with.

  6. Very well written. Good use of emotions. Loved the ending. It sounded like a dream I once had but I woke up!

  7. Unsettling thought to be all alone. Nice way to interpret it.

  8. Aww how sad. That's a very uncomfortable thing to think about, being the last human on earth. You did an amazing job with this post.

  9. Yikes! Gave me chills. Nice post!

  10. *sniff sniff* I smell a story! Love this prompt!

  11. This is scary! I would totally freak out if I had that much alone time!

So....what did you think? And are you THAT Sarah Michelle?
