A Soul Crying Out

As I explore and take in my new surroundings, I find myself noticing how many megachurches there are in this area. There are a bunch.

I also notice how little I see ministry.

There is widespread homelessness in the Tampa-Metro area. You see it quite a bit, it's much more open here, probably because there are so many more people in this area. Being who I am and what type of church I come from, I find myself thinking "How can I help?" Of course I can't open a home for everyone, though I really wish I could.

My soul is crying out to help, a ground I'm familiar with. I find myself thinking about my church family back in Kentucky and how we would be organizing a way to bring food to those who need it. We would find a way to ensure some of the basic needs are met for these people. It may be happening here, but I don't see it. I don't FEEL it.

Yesterday, as The Hubs and I were out in our travels, two churches required a sheriff's deputy to direct traffic. One church actually had parking attendants. They had a campus, a HUGE campus. All I could think to myself is "That money being spent on these things could go toward a much bigger cause!"

We haven't found a church yet, because they all seem to be either megachurches or they seem to be exclusive, members only or not welcoming of sinners.

I love where I'm at. I love this area, this new place I call home. But my soul longs for that spiritual connection I felt with my church family back home. I wish I could clone each and everyone one of them and have them here. I want to go out to the people, go to those dark places, those highways and biways and let those people know that they are me, by Christ. I want to help them, feed them, cleanse them. I want to sit with these people, learn their stories, find out why, find out how.

Oh Jesus friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus friend of sinners break our hearts for what breaks yours

I ask you, friends, to lift up those who are homeless, those who are seeking, those who are wandering. Not only in the Tampa area, but the world over.
